Six-state buying checklist

Find a nearby farm, then confirm the order.

Start with distance and buying format. A useful farm shortlist still needs a current quote, availability check, and pickup or delivery plan before you commit.

Search by state or ZIP code.

Local Beef Index covers Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York and New Jersey. The directory includes farms with varying levels of documented information; a listing alone does not confirm that beef is available today.

Use the ZIP-code search for a radius around home or the farm map to plan a route. Locations may be approximate; confirm the collection address and opening hours with the farm.

Decide what you are ready to buy.

For a few meals, start with individual cuts. For a smaller mixed order, browse boxes and bundles. For a freezer share, first compare share sizes and ask the seller for expected weights and a complete quote.

Read a listing's source and checked date. A past season's offer is useful background, but it does not establish a new ordering window. A website without a captured price may still sell beef; contact the farm rather than treating the missing price as evidence it has stopped selling.

Ask whether “quarter” means a mixed split quarter or a particular part of the animal, which cuts are included, and whether substitutions are possible. The name alone does not settle the cut mix.

Confirm four things directly.

  1. The order: what is available, expected quantity, cut mix and likely ready date.
  2. The bill: price basis, processing and delivery charges, deposit credit, and when the remaining balance is due.
  3. The handoff: exact location or delivery area, time window, package condition and how to transport the order.
  4. Your storage: expected packaged pounds or box dimensions and enough usable freezer space.

Keep the seller's answer with the order confirmation. If a listing differs from the farm's current information, use the farm's current quote and submit a correction with its source.

Review published prices and work through the share bill.
